Idiopathic Head Tremors in Bulldogs

Here at Heron Lakes Animal Hospital, we enjoy caring for dogs of all shapes and sizes. However, we have to admit that bulldogs have a special place in our hearts. These lovable, stoic pups make absolutely wonderful pets! A Parkland, FL vet offers some bulldog care tips below.

Don’t Overexert Fido

Like other brachycephalic pups, bulldogs have short air passages, and can lose their breath very easily. Don’t encourage your pet to exercise vigorously. Swimming is also a no-go. Although your furry pal may enjoy splashing around in a kiddie pool or playing in the spray from a hose, he won’t be safe in water that goes over his head.

Consider Pet Insurance

Bulldogs are prone to certain health issues, such as hip dysplasia, respiratory issues, and interdigital cysts. Consider enrolling Fido in pet insurance. This could very well save you hundreds, or even thousands, down the road!

Don’t Let Fido Overheat

Overheating is a big concern with these guys. Keep Fido in climate-controlled areas in summer, and make sure he always has fresh water. Also, keep him on soft surfaces as much as possible.

Diet

A proper diet is very important! Don’t let Fido get overweight. Also, avoid giving your canine buddy table scraps. Bulldogs have quite sensitive digestive systems, and can get quite sick from eating things that aren’t good for them.

Exercising Fido

Bulldogs tend to be rather lazy. Although you don’t want to overexert your pooch, your furry couch potato will still need some exercise. Fido will need a daily walk, at the very least.

Celebrating With Fido

Did you know that bulldogs have their own holiday? April 21st is Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day! Set a reminder to pamper Fido on his special occasion.

Grooming

Many bulldogs have wrinkles, which makes their faces look super cute. These folds can trap moisture, however, which will create a hospitable environment for bacteria. Keep Fido’s face clean! Some bulldogs, particularly the smaller ones, are also prone to eye irritation. This may be because they are low to the ground, and easily get dust in their eyes. Wipe away any gunk from your pup’s eyes. Dental care is also very important! These guys are rather prone to dental problems, such as overcrowding. Ask your vet for specific advice.
