Creating a Catio

July 1, 2020

Do you keep your feline friend inside? If so, that’s great! Kitties are much safer indoors, where they are protected from threats like cars, weather, predators, and parasites. However, that doesn’t mean Fluffy can’t enjoy a taste of nature. Why not make her a catio? A local Coral Springs, FL vet offers tips on how to do this below.

Choosing The Purrfect Spot

Fluffy isn’t very finicky when it comes to picking places. A screened in porch or patio is perfect, but you can also use a spare room, sunroom, or even just a bright corner. In fact, you can turn your whole house into a catio if you want!

Plants

Once you’ve got the place picked out, the next step is to add some pet-safe plants. Kitties love to sniff and nibble at foliage, and peek out at their humans from behind green leaves. Some good options are Snake plants, Money plants, Rubber plants, Cast Iron plants, Boston ferns, and Spider plants. If you want a pop of color, you can add some African violets, orchids, carnations, or zinnias. Certain palms, such as Areca palms, Ponytail palms, and Parlor palms are also fine. You can also grow fresh herbs, such as parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, and, of course, catnip. Avoid sago palms, lilies, tulips, azaleas, and daffodils. You can find a full list of safe and unsafe plants at the ASPCA website.

Entertainment

Our feline buddies love to lounge around, looking adorable. However, Fluffy can’t spend all of her free time snoozing. Give your furball a window seat, so she can watch birds and squirrels. You’ll also want to set out toys for her to bat around.

Purrniture

Next, you’ll need to add some cat furniture. This is a great spot for a cat tower! Fluffy will gain a napping spot, jungle gym, nail care station, and a great lookout spot. Your furry buddy may also appreciate a catwalk or a kitty hammock. Want to score some extra purrs? Set out empty boxes and paper bags for her to explore. (Note: only do this if your catio is enclosed. You don’t want to attract critters!) Don’t forget to add some comfy chairs for yourself. This may be a great coffee spot!
