Keeping Fido Hydrated

July 15, 2020

Summer is here! The heat can be rough on our canine pals. Dehydration and overheating are very dangerous, and can both happen very quickly on hot days. At this time of year, it’s crucial to make sure that your dog is staying properly hydrated. A Parkland, FL vet offers some advice on this below.

Water

First and foremost: make sure that Fido always has plenty of fresh water to slurp up. If you have more than one dog, a large house, and/or a yard, set out multiple water stations. You’ll need to clean the bowls daily to make sure the water stays clean.

Fountain

Did you know that many pets prefer to drink running water? Consider getting your canine friend a fountain. There are even some that shoot water into the air when Fido steps on a pad.

Doggy On The Go

Does your furry best friend enjoy going on adventures to parks or beaches? Get Fido a portable water bottle with an attached dispenser. You may also want to get into the habit of keeping a gallon of water in your trunk. (Note: hopefully this goes without saying, but you should never leave your dog unattended in a car, even for just a few minutes.)

Treats

If there’s one thing all of our canine patients love unanimously, it’s treats. Keep hydration in mind when choosing your pup’s snacks. Doggy ice cream is a good choice here. You can also make pupsicles for Fido by pouring water or sodium-free broth over bits of kibble, crushed dog treats, shredded meat, or pet-safe fruits and veggies. Use an ice cube tray, waxed paper cups, or a freezer mold to divide into small servings.

Broth

Speaking of broth, it’s a great snack for Fido. Because it contains electrolytes, it’s also very helpful in preventing dehydration. Give your pooch a bowl of chilled broth on hot days. You can also add a bit to his food if he likes it. Just be sure to use the sodium-free type.

Ice

Does your dog like chewing ice cubes? While you don’t want to give him too many, there’s no reason Fido can’t have one or two on scorching days. You can also drop an ice cube into your furry buddy’s bowl on hot days.
