Tips for Training Your Dog

February 1, 2021

It’s Dog Training Education Month! Given the choice, Fido may very well try to train you. Some of our canine patients have their humans wrapped around their paws! However, no matter how much you plan to spoil your pup, it’s important to make sure that he will obey basic commands. A Coral Springs, FL vet offers some tips on training your furry pal in this article.

Starting Out

All dogs should know the commands to Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down . There are many more that they can learn, but you’ll want to start with these. Work on one at a time. Sit is usually the best to do first, because it’s so easy for Fido to pick up. Just don’t move on until your pet has mastered each command.

Rewards

Treats are excellent training aids, as they provide Fido with a tangible reward for his hard work. It’s best to use smaller ones, though. Cut up hot dogs, small pieces of chicken, and bits of kibble are all good options. Don’t forget to praise your pup, too!

Timing

Man’s Best Friend has been at our sides for as long as 30,000 years. He’s had a lot of time to get to know us! Fido will quickly pick up on bad moods or anxiety. Only work with your canine buddy when you are in a good mood. Otherwise, he may grow wary of training, which is the last thing you want.

Avoid Negative Reinforcements

There are many schools and methods for training. However, we strongly advise avoiding ones that use negative reinforcement, such as shock collars. Focus on rewarding your furry friend for doing well.

Class Schedules

Don’t bore your pup with long classes. Generally, 15 to 20 minutes a day is fine. You can also break training up into smaller sessions.

Reinforcement

Once your canine companion has learned the basics, you’ll need to keep reinforcing his knowledge. Tell him to Sit for his treat, or practice Come and Stay in the yard on nice days.

Be Consistent

One of the most important things to remember is to just be consistent. Always use the same words of phrasing. Also, don’t allow Fido up on the couch one day, and then reprimand him for it the next.
