Dog House Repair Month

July 1, 2021

Did you know that July is Doghouse Repair Month? If Fido has a yard of his own, and a doghouse to look adorable in, he’s a lucky pup. Doghouses often get overlooked when it comes to cleaning and home maintenance, though, so this is a good reminder to give your pet’s outdoor hangout a good going-over. A local Coral Springs, FL vet offers a few helpful  tips on this in this article.

Cleaning

Give your canine pal’s house a good scrub down. If you have a pressure washer, use that. Otherwise, a high setting on your hose will work. Use an unscented detergent. Be sure to rinse all the suds off!

Safety Check

Take a close look at Fido’s outdoor home. Look for rotten spots, gaps, and sharp edges. Make sure there are no nails, screws, or splinters sticking out.

Elevate it

Doghouses should sit off the ground a bit, so that rain can run beneath them.  Just don’t leave any gaps that may make inviting holes for snakes or mice!

Squatters

It’s not uncommon for things like wasps or spiders to move in with dogs. Use humane, non-toxic methods to evict unauthorized tenants. You may also need to check beneath the doghouse for snakes.

Yard Pupgrade

Does your furry pal love to run and play? Make his house even more fun for him. Add a sandbox for him to bury toys in, or a kiddie pool so he can cool off on hot days. Your cute pet may also appreciate a doggy fountain.

Shade

Florida summers can be brutally hot. Put Fido’s doghouse in a shady area to help protect him from the weather. It’s also important to pick a doghouse that offers good insulation. Real wood works well for this.

Décor

Who says doghouses have to be boring? Have some fun with your pet’s little house. A coat of (nontoxic) paint will freshen up the look. You can also add signs, flowerboxes, or even a rooftop deck! If your dog likes the water, add a kiddie pool, or set out some sprinklers for him to splash around in. Some pet-safe plants are also a good bet. Check the ASPCA site here for a full directory.
