Caring for a Brachy Dog in Summer

Do you have a pug, bulldog, or another type of brachycephalic pup? If so, you’ve got a really cute pet! Fido may need some extra TLC at this time of year, though. Brachys can overheat and/or lose their breath quickly when it’s hot out. A Coral Springs, FL vet offers some advice on caring for your canine buddy in this article.

Heat

Overheating is a concern for all dogs at this time of year, but brachys are at particular risk. Usually, dogs pant to cool themselves off when they get too hot. Brachys have a hard time getting air through those short nasal passages. That means they can go into serious respiratory distress very quickly in the heat. Keep Fido indoors, in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners, as much as you can. Your four-legged friend will also need to have fresh, cool water available at all times.

Swimming

Swimming is fine for most dogs. Many of them really love it! Brachys, however, are the exception to this rule. Fido tends to get out of breath after even mild exertion, which can be very dangerous in the water. We strongly advise against letting brachys swim. That doesn’t mean your canine pal can’t splash around. He can still enjoy wading in shallow water or playing in the spray from a hose. If you take your dog to the beach, do so in the mornings or after it’s rained, when it’s cooler. Keep a close eye on your furry best bud: even small waves could knock him over.

Exercise

Brachys do need some activity to stay healthy. However, they really shouldn’t be encouraged to run or play, especially when it’s hot out. Slow, relaxed walks are the better option.

Cold Treats

As mentioned above, you’ll need to be extra careful not to let Fido get too hot. The good news (for him) is that dogs can enjoy many different types of cold treats. Pick up some doggy ice cream for your pup! You can also make him some pupsicles. Look online for recipes that use safe ingredients.

Paws

Many brachys have quite sensitive paws. Some are prone to getting blisters. Use paw balm to protect your furry friend’s feet from scorching sidewalks.
