Thanksgiving Dog Care Tips

November 15, 2021

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! Many of us are really looking forward to this year’s holiday gatherings. Of course, there’s also lots of folks who are entering their first holiday season with pets they adopted during quarantines. Taking a few precautions will help things go more smoothly. Read on as a local Coral Springs, FL vet offers some tips on celebrating Thanksgiving with Fido.

Tire The Pup Out

Is your canine buddy a four-legged bundle of energy? Help Fido burn off his zoomies early in the day by taking him for a long walk. This is a great way to start the morning! A fun session of Fetch would also not be inappropriate.

Feed Carefully

Fido will definitely appreciate having some of that delicious turkey. Just remove the skin, bones, and fat first. Having a different main course? Most types of plain, boneless meat, fish, and poultry are fine, though you do want to limit your pup’s intake of organ meats, like liver and kidney. Too much bacon or sausage isn’t great either. Your pooch can also have some fruits and veggies, such as cooked pumpkin or squash, spinach, apple slices, blueberries, and bananas.

You’ll also need to be aware of what your pup shouldn’t have. Grapes, currants, and raisins are at the top of the list: eating just one of these tiny fruits can be fatal to some dogs. Other unsafe foods include garlic and onions; avocado; pitted fruits; chocolate; caffeine; nuts; mushrooms; meat on the bone; raw dough; and anything containing xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Supervise Guest Interactions

Does your furry pal get agitated easily? Put him in his crate or a separate room as people are coming or going. You don’t want him bowling your aunt over at the door!

Begging

Our canine companions are master beggars. If Fido’s table manners aren’t exactly perfect, keep him in another area during dinner. This isn’t only because of petiquette: your pooch could also snap up something unsafe.

Tail Wags

It’s important to remember the reason for the holiday: gratitude. Our furry pals are definitely something to be thankful for! Carve out some quiet quality time with Fido. Taking him for a long walk is a great way to get through that food coma!
