Keeping An Older Cat Healthy

March 1, 2022

Is your kitty a feline senior? Fluffy will always be the same cute and lovable pet as always, but she will go through changes as she ages. Just like people, your cat will need some extra care and TLC as she ages. Just like younger kitties, aging cats need good food, comfy shelter, and proper veterinary care to thrive. However, you can go a bit further in keeping your furball happy and healthy. Here, a Coral Springs, FL veterinarian discusses keeping your furry buddy happy, healthy, and purring in her golden years.

Playtime

Did you know that playtime is very good for older cats? Pouncing on that catnip mouse is a great workout for Fluffy. It’s also good for her mind. Kitties have to focus to nail those tricky jumps and pounces. That mental stimulation is good for your furry friend’s brain, just as reading or doing crosswords is for older humans.

Nightlights

Fluffy may experience a decline in her vision or hearing as she ages. Put out nightlights to help her get around more easily after dark.

Confusion

Just like people, cats sometimes experience a cognitive decline as they age. Fluffy may forget how to get around, or just seem very disoriented. She may meow to express her distress at this. Just do what you can to comfort her.

Monitoring

Keep a close eye on your kitty, and watch for potential signs of sickness. These may include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, respiratory issues, litterbox issues, lethargy, listlessness, and/or poor fur quality. Fluffy may also just not seem like herself. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

Nutrition

Making sure your kitty is getting proper nutrition. Your feline pal may benefit from certain vitamins or supplements. For instance, fish oil can be helpful for pets with arthritis. Fluffy will also benefit from a high-quality senior formula food. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Purrs

Part of keeping Fluffy healthy means keeping her happy. Small touches can go a long way here. That entails things like senior-friendly litterboxes, pet ramps and stairs, and window seats. It’s also important to pay lots of attention to her. Spend time with your cat every day, and let her snuggle up on your lap if she likes.
