Helping Fido Beat The Heat

Florida summers are beautiful, but they aren’t exactly mild. This time of year can be rough on our canine companions. After all, Fido is wearing a fur coat! He also can’t really sweat to cool off, which puts him at risk of getting heat exhaustion or heat stroke if he gets too hot. Over the next few months, you’ll need to be very careful to keep your furry pal cool. A local Coral Springs, FL vet offers some advice on this below.

Hydration

First and foremost, be sure to keep your canine pal properly hydrated. Keep your furry friend’s water bowl clean and filled. If you have a yard, Fido will also need an outdoor water station. (Tip: to make this look cute, put a water dish in a pretty plant pot filled with sand or cat litter.)

Grooming

A cool summer ‘do will also keep your cute pet comfortable. However, not all dogs should be clipped. This can damage some pups’ coats! If you aren’t sure whether you should give Fido a haircut, check with your vet.

Schedule

Those summer storms help cool things down quite a bit. When you can, take Fido out for his evening walk after the rains have passed. You’ll also want to try and time his morning walk before the worst of the heat. Limit his outdoor time during the hottest parts of the day, and don’t encourage him to run, jump, or play too much. Water Fun

Swimming

Swimming can be a great way to cool off for both people and pets. Just put your canine friend’s safety first. If you are going to a pool, immediately show Fido where the pool stairs are. Headed to the beach? Pick one that allows dogs, and keep a very close eye on your furry best friend.

Snacks

Fido is always up for a delicious snack! Offer him some yummy cold treats, like doggy ice cream or chilled sodium-free broth.
