Spotlight On Some Of Our Special Services

June 1, 2022

Here at Heron Lakes, we pride ourselves on being able to offer a wide range of cutting-edge technology. One thing that we believe sets us apart in this area is the fact that we bring in specialists for our patients as needed. Just like human doctors, veterinarians often find themselves drawn to certain facets of animal care, and may decide to specialize in those areas. Here, your Coral Springs, FL veterinarian lists some things we may work with specialists on.

Endoscopies

Endoscopies have revolutionized the world of human medicine, and it’s proven to be just as useful for pets. Endoscopies involve the use of small cameras, which are inserted into the pet in a non-surgical manner. As a diagnostic tool, this can be very helpful for helping diagnose gastrointestinal issues, internal bleeding, and/or other problems.

Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are another advancement that allow veterinarians to ‘look’ at a pet’s organs in real time. These of course are often used on pregnant animals. However, they are also helpful in diagnosing cardiac issues, enlarged organs, tumors and masses, and blood flow issues. (Fido also sometimes gets ultrasounds after eating foreign objects, but that’s a whole other topic.)

Oral Surgery

Dental problems may not be a cosmetic concern for pets, but they definitely can cause health issues. Some of these can be quite serious! Dental issues not only interfere with pets’ ability to chew—and therefore process—food, they can also cause dangerous infections.

CT

Computed tomography scans, or CT scans, are another great way for vets to get a real-time ‘map’ of their patients’ bodies. CT scans are often used on the internal organs, as well as the nose, bones, and joints, and can be extremely useful for diagnosing issues.

Arthroscopies

Arthroscopies are similar to endoscopies, in that they involve the use of tiny cameras. However, there are a few key differences. Mainly, these are used to examine joints, usually the knee, hip, or shoulder. This process allows the veterinarian to get a really good look at your pet’s joints, as well as their tendons and ligaments. It can also be used to remove bone splinters, which could otherwise wreak havoc inside your pet’s joints. They are considered minimally-invasive surgical procedures, as a small incision is made for the camera.
