Summer Dog Care Tips

We may have a few more weeks until summer officially starts, but those hot, sticky days have already found us. Heat can be very dangerous for our canine pals! Here, a Coral Springs, FL vet offers some summer dog care tips.

Water

Make sure that Fido always has clean water. You may need multiple watering stations, particularly if you have a large house and/or more than one pet. Also, be sure to bring water along whenever you take your furry buddy out and about.

Grooming

Dead fur and dander can make dogs’ coats quite hot and itchy. Brushing Fido regularly can help him stay cool. Some pups will be more comfortable with a cool summer ‘do. However, this isn’t an across-the-board recommendation. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Schedule

When it gets really hot out, adjust Fido’s daily doggy routine. Wak and play with him in the mornings and evenings, when it’s a little cooler.

Paw Care

Keep up with your canine companion’s pawdicures! Fido can burn his paw pads on scorching hot surfaces. Paw balm or wax will protect those delicate toe beans.

Adventures

Many dogs love going places with their humans. However, that doesn’t mean you should take your furry friend everywhere. Cars can get dangerously hot in just a few minutes on sweltering days. If you can’t take Fido inside with you, leave him at home. He’ll be both cooler and safer.

Parasites

Summer is a prime time for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These uninvited guests carry dangerous diseases, such as Lyme, and can transport other parasites. Keep up with Fido’s parasite control products!

Cooling

Watch for signs of overheating. Panting is usually the first one you’ll see. If Fido seems hot, immediately give him some water. You’ll also need to take steps to cool him down. Bring him to a cool, shaded area. You can spritz him with water, or soak a towel with water and wrap that around him. Call your vet as you’re doing this.

Cool Treats

Who doesn’t enjoy a cold treat? Fido can have doggy ice cream, which you can find in stores. You can also make your pooch some frozen snacks. Look online for ideas and recipes. Just stick with safe ingredients. Ask your vet for more information.
