Summer Care for Cats

June 15, 2021

Summer is here. While many of you may be making big plans for the next few months, it’s probably safe to say that our feline patients are keeping to their normal schedules of napping, eating, and looking adorable. Fluffy is quite self-sufficient, but she does need some extra TLC at this time of year. The heat can be pretty hard on kitties! A Coral Springs, FL vet discusses summer care for cats below.

Water

Hydration is absolutely crucial for kitties. Make sure Fluffy always has fresh water. You may want to get her a water fountain. If you allow your furry buddy to go outside, make sure that she always has water available outdoors as well.

Grooming

It’s a good idea to brush your cat regularly. Dead fur and dander can make her pretty coat quite hot and itchy! While you are doing this, check your pet’s paws. Cats can get blisters from hot tar. They can also get ticks, pebbles, and other things stuck between their toes.

Heat

Our feline pals can overheat very quickly in summer. Fluffy should always have access to cool, shaded spots and/or rooms with fans or AC.

Safety

We strongly suggest keeping cats indoors. While Fluffy may love walking on your car, rolling around in the dirt, or bringing you dead mice, she’s very vulnerable to hazards posed by cars, weather, traffic, predators and other dangers. Keep that motor going by setting out some pet-safe plants, and offering your furball a window seat with a good view.

Cold Treats

Fluffy may be finicky at times, but that doesn’t mean she won’t enjoy a cold snack. Try offering her some kitty ice cream or chilled sodium-free broth. Your furry bff may also appreciate some chilled tuna and juice over shaved ice, or frozen slices of pate-type cat food.

Plants

Toxic plants are another concern. Make sure your yard doesn’t contain anything that is dangerous to Fluffy. Check the ASPCA website here for a list of safe and unsafe plants.

Precautions

Fluffy should be fixed, microchipped, and wearing ID tags. Your furball should also be current on her vaccinations and parasite control. These simple, basic precautions will really go a long way towards keeping your furry buddy safe and sound!
