Every Day Is Tag Day

April 2, 2022

As you may have noticed, there are lots of pet observance days on the calendar, and we like to recognize as many as we can. There’s one coming up that is very important to your pet’s safety. Saturday, April 2nd, is Every Day Is Tag Day! A Coral Springs, FL vet goes over some key points of tags and their importance below.

Sobering Statistics

The numbers on lost pets are quite heartbreaking. About one of every three pets will get lost at some point in their lives! While microchips are an absolute must, it’s equally important that Fido have tags on. This is still the simplest and easiest way for someone to be able to contact you if they find your dog! Plus, they’re required by law in many places.

New Technology

Technology has moved forward in leaps and bounds over the past few decades. One thing that we’re thrilled to see become reality is the GPS-enabled dog collar. There are already several different versions of these out there. Many have really neat features. For instance, some will alert you if your canine buddy leaves a designated area. There are a few things to look at before picking one. Battery life is definitely a big one. And, since many of these use subscription plans to connect you (or rather, Fido) to cell phone towers, you’ll also want to consider fees and options.

Tag Basics

What should you put on Fido’s tags? While it may be tempting to note that he’s an adept squirrel chaser or loves eggs, it’s more important to stick with the most crucial information: your name and number. We also strongly advise adding ‘reward’. This actually does increase the chances of someone bringing your pet back to you if they find him!

Fashion-Forward Tags

Have some fun with Fido’s collar and tags! If your dog is a pampered princess pup, pick some pink sparkly ones, and perhaps a glitter collar. A spiked collar may be adorable on a bulldog. It’s worth mentioning that there are sometimes concerns about dogs getting stuck on things. If this is something you’re worried about, consider getting a breakaway collar. Of course, your pet’s tags won’t help if the collar breaks off. That’s why microchipping is also crucial!
