Helping Your Pup Recover From Surgery

Food

Being sick can sometimes throw dogs off their appetite, just as it does for some people. If your pooch isn’t eating, try tempting him with something that’s easy for him to manage. Plain cooked chicken, chicken soup, cat food, and/or sodium free broth are a few possible options. Your vet will be able to offer more specific suggestions.

Bedding

Fido will be much more comfortable in a good bed. If your pup is having trouble with diarrhea and/or vomiting, get a washable slipcover and a throw blanket to protect the actual bed from getting soiled.

Isolation

You may want to keep your canine buddy isolated from other pets for the first few days, when his stitches are the most vulnerable. Consider setting Fido up in his own room. Use a baby gate at the door, so he doesn’t feel too lonely. He may also appreciate having a radio playing.

Monitoring

Your vet will provide you with specific after-care instructions. These should include warning signs to watch for. These will vary a bit depending on the type of surgery, but some general red flags would be bleeding, redness, pus, heat, and/or discoloration around the stitches; fever; vomiting; diarrhea; respiratory issues; and listlessness. Call your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.

Medicine

As you may know, giving Fido a pill can be tricky. Pill pockets can help with this. You may also have good luck hiding pills in meatballs, cheese, or hot dog pieces. Ask your vet for tips. 

TLC

Just like people, dogs appreciate being fussed over a bit when they don’t feel well. You don’t want to go overboard: just make sure that your furry patient feels loved and safe. Offer lots of forehead kisses and gentle ear scritches.
